In 1971, members of the Baker and Heinle families, parishioners at St. Ambrose Parish in Brunswick, got together to start Scouting units for the Brunswick area, with St. Ambrose as their chartered organization. The founders were Scouts as youth, so it made sense for them to want to let their new, growing families experience Scouting as they did many years earlier. Cub Scout Pack 3513 was started that year, and since then has provided the Scouting experience for hundreds of youth in the area. When Cub Scouting was expanded in 2018 to allow girls to join the program, Pack 3513 jumped at the opportunity to expand the program to the entire family. What started as a program for 8-, 9-, 10-, and 11-year-old boys has now grown to welcome boys and girls from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.
One year later, in 1972, the founding families started Troop 513, bringing the Boy Scouts (now Scouts BSA) experience to St. Ambrose. In the years following, Troop 513 has had hundreds of Scouts come through their doors, participating in campouts, hikes, cookouts, high adventure activities, summer camp, and lots of laughs, leadership and learning along the way. Over 100 Scouts have earned Eagle Scout over the years with Troop 513, the most of any troop in the area.
In 2024, Scouting at St. Ambrose expanded further with the founding of a female Scouts BSA troop, Troop 7513. The troop, with the full support and resources of both St. Ambrose and Troop 513, has begun welcoming girls into the Scouts BSA program, allowing families with boys and girls to get the full Scouting experience in one location. Following the same program and principles that the boys have enjoyed for over 110 years, Troop 7513 provides girls the same outdoor adventures, leadership experiences, and skill building that Scouting America has had since 1910.
